The Problem

  • Young adults struggle to cook each day due to their busy schedules and time constraints.

  • It's a constant battle between craving, nutrition, availability, and time leading to uncertainty and decision-making dilemmas.

  • They often run out of the ingredients required to cook a meal of their choice, hindering consistent healthy cooking practices.

  • Limited culinary knowledge and skills may discourage many young adults from trying exciting, wholesome recipes, restricting their ability to diversify their dietary choices and embrace healthier eating patterns.

Meal Planner

Meal Planner

The home screen encourages users to scan or manually input their ingredients, initiating the meal planning process.

Clear CTAs are strategically placed for easy access, enhancing user engagement. Visual cues accompany recipe suggestions for an enjoyable user experience. The app's built-in technology detects ingredients, allowing users to edit or add items effortlessly.

Usability Test Results: Users smoothly navigated through the scanning feature, but found the meal planning page somewhat perplexing. Identifying filters and search options proved challenging for them.

Easy recipe instructions

Easy recipe instructions

I used a step-based approach to design the meal planning page, allowing users to pre-select suggested meals for the day. The recipe detail page offers step-by-step instructions and videos for easy understanding. Additionally, I incorporated rewards to boost user engagement after completing a recipe.

Usability Test Results: Users appreciated the effectiveness of the step-based recipe instructions and were pleased to receive rewards upon successfully cooking a meal.

Investment and Rewards

Investment and Rewards

Carefully crafting reward and investment features aimed at engaging and motivating users to adopt healthier cooking habits and enhance their lifestyle. Users had the opportunity to amplify rewards through friend referrals or increased cooking activity, redeeming them for grocery shopping. Weekly/monthly health results served as a motivating factor.

Usability Test Results: The need to rearrange health data for better comprehension. Additionally, users found it challenging to grasp the requirement of uploading a photo of the cooked meal to earn rewards.

I applied the Double Diamond Method and the 5 Elements of UX Design to develop a product that fosters lasting habits, drawing on insights from the Hooked Model.

Once the Prototype was ready, I conducted usability testing and pretotyping to ensure its effectiveness.

Research and Ideation

Research and Ideation

To learn about the problem area, I interviewed four young adults who shared their struggles with maintaining healthy eating habits.

Common pain points emerged, including time constraints impacting meal preparation, emotional well-being affecting dietary choices, and a lack of accessible information on healthy cooking alternatives.

These insights were synthesized to drive the ideation process. I created a storyboard and listed out all features using the KANO card method. Then, I used the MosCow Methodology to prioritize the features, sorting them into Must-Have, Should-Have, Could-Have, and Won't-Have categories. This structured approach laid a solid foundation for the entire project.

Key Insights

Time Constraints

Balancing time limitations, youthful individuals search for speedy and straightforward, yet scrumptious, appetizing dishes that additionally support wellness.

Wellness

Psychological and emotional wellness greatly affects individuals' dietary habits, which may result in enduring health issues like accelerated weight reduction, PCOS, and PCOD.

Awareness

Limited awareness of nutritious alternatives and recipes hinders their ability to make informed and healthy meal choices.

Cravings

Late-night hunger pangs often compel them to opt for snacks or leftover junk food, as most nearby restaurants and stores close by 9 pm, creating a challenge in maintaining healthy eating habits.

Pretotyping Experiments

Pretotyping Experiments

To validate the desirability of this product, I applied the pretotyping experiments based on Alberto Savoia's book "The Right It." The first step was to identify the riskiest assumptions I have made using the 'Risky Assumption Matrix' and derive a hypothesis outcome. I employed Fake Front Door and Mechanical Turk techniques to test the premise of the product. It helped me understand the pain points and viability of the idea.
